
“Make the next right decision!” – my notes from #RelationshipsAreEverything
Yesterday I attended the Relationships Are Everything virtual summit organised by Fundraising Everywhere and Julie Berthoud-Jury. Here are my notes from the excellent sessions I attended.
Here's Cherian Koshy on decolonising charity fundraising strategy:
"We all face elements of colonial influences in our lives." "Think and unpack the things you thought you knew."
What has colonialism left behind? Taught us, eg, that scarcity increases value Reshapes how indigenous populations see themselves and how we look at the world Industrialisation shaped what we value and how we go about our daily lives.
"Colonisation might not be anybody today's fault, but it's everyone's responsibility." "We as settlers, myself included, can not be passive bystanders in the process of de-colonisation"
Look at strategic planning language through lens of colonialist influence. "Story is the most powerful element in human existence" "We believe in a mission but who wrote it & why does it matter?" Create safe spaces where anything can be questioned.
There's no view from nowhere" Make the next right decision. We mustn't sit on our hands and do nothing. Unpack assumptions that we've had. Don't approach it from one size fits all perspective. There's no 1 right way of doing things.
